Gonzalez nets second goal of season as Penguins drop another one-goal decision

Oscar O'Con made eight saves in his first collegiate start.
Box Score SAN FRANCISCO — Martin Gonzalez scored his second goal of the season but the Dominican University of California men's soccer team fell 2-1 in non-conference play at San Francisco State on Tuesday.

The Penguins (0-5-1), victim of the injury bug, were already headed across the Golden Gate without the injured Dale Howard and Chandler Roselli, as well as Chris Sennes. During warmups, senior goalkeeper Erik Anderson was forced out of the starting lineup with an injury. To further hinder the Penguins, Vini Enriquez limped off in the second half after being taken out on a tackle.

Redshirt freshman Oscar O'Con was given the starting nod in Anderson's absence. O'Con got his share of work and performed admirably with eight saves. He allowed a goal in the 24th minute on Sam Merritt's shot from five yards out.

After Cory Rodas was issued a red card in the 40th minute, Dominican finally took advantage of the man-up situation and broke through in the 81st minute.

Sophomore Lee LeVerrier drove down the center of the field and found Gonzalez to his right, who buried the shot from five yards out.

The equalizer gave the Penguins life but it proved to be short-lived, as SFSU (3-1-1) took the lead back for good when Merritt found James Aguirre, whose header from six yards out deflected past the Dominican defense.

Dominican now heads into PacWest Conference play beginning Thursday, Sept. 25. Kickoff is slated for 12 p.m. Live video and stats will be available at dominicanathletics.com/live while Penguin Radio will handle the broadcast. Dominican Head Coach Phil Billeci-Gard will join Penguin Radio on Wednesday, Sept. 17 on the Temple of Swan's "Inside the Icebox" segment at 7:15 p.m.
