Penguins earn season sweep over NDNU

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's volleyball team earned the season sweep of Notre Dame de Namur on Saturday with a 3-1 (29-27, 25-13, 21-25, 25-16) Pacific West Conference victory. The Penguins have not lost a match to their Bay Area rivals dating back to 2011.

The Penguins, who came off of a five-set loss at Fresno Pacific, rebounded with a convincing win that saw several career performances. Freshman Aimee Steinwand led all players with a career-best 22 kills. Her 22 kills are fifth-most in a single match for a Dominican player in the Division II era. Madison Marshall added 12 kills on .391 hitting, which were both career-highs for the freshman middle blocker. Fellow freshman Shannon RiggioKerley added 10 kills and 11 digs.

As a team, the Penguins were in sync the entire day. Dominican posted its highest hitting percentage since Sept. 12 with a .294 hitting percentage, including .410 in the final set. Hannah Smith dished out 54 assists as Dominican tallied 62 kills. Defensively, the Penguins were just as sharp. Libero Amanda Lee recorded a season-high 27 digs and freshman Alexa LoGiudice had a career-high 13 digs as the Penguins recorded 71 as a team.

At the net, Dominican had 15 total blocks. Samantha Rains, who returned to action after missing the Penguins' last match, continued her strong season at the net. The senior middle blocker entered the game ranked sixth in NCAA Division II in blocks and tallied a block solo and nine block assists.

Bianca Alvarez led NDNU with 19 kills.

Dominican flexed its muscle early with a 4-0 lead in set one and fended off two NDNU runs. The Argos had set point after an Alvarez kill but the Penguins countered with a Steinwand kill. The teams traded points until Dominican posted back-to-back points on a Steinwand kill and an NDNU attacking error. After using a six-point run to take a 13-7 lead in set two, Dominican closed the set out easily on a 12-2 run. The Argos got the best of the Penguins in set three with six of the set's final seven points. Dominican roared back in set four to close things out. Up 11-10, the Penguins charged ahead with six of the next seven points and only allowed one more earned point after that.

Dominican will have a second crack at Fresno Pacific on Tuesday, Nov. 11, with Rains and Madeline Powelson both back in the mix. First serve against the fourth-place Sunbirds is slated for 7 p.m. in the Conlan Center.
