ARCATA, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's basketball team scored their most points in a game so far this season but fell 91-74 on Saturday night in non-conference play at Humboldt State.
Despite taking the game's first lead, Dominican would not lead again. However, the Penguins stuck around far longer than the final tally showed. Dominican trailed by two possessions most of the first half and kept the Lumberjacks from scoring for over four minutes at one point in the first half. Still, HSU managed to make the most of its opportunities and held a 38-27 halftime advantage.
One of
Carly Holboke's three three-pointers capped a seven-point Penguins run in the second half and trimmed the lead to 65-58 at the nine-minute mark of the second half. Free throws would help HSU pad its final margin of victory.
Holboke led the Penguins with 17 points.
Melissa Boscarino and
Sarah Nelson each added 10 points. Nelson reached her second double-double of the season with 11 rebounds.
Allyssa Weatherd scored nine points, with those points all coming at the free throw line. She went there 16 times alone and as a team the Penguins made 37 visits but only shot 51.4 percent from the line on Saturday.
Jessy Marshall and
Sandra Ikeora each added eight points apiece in the loss.
Four HSU starters reached double digits, paced by Jae Shin's 26 points. A'Jaee Foster added a double-double with 16 points and 16 rebounds.
Dominican returns home to begin PacWest play with a women-men's doubleheader on Thursday, Sept. 4. The Penguins host Notre Dame de Namur with tipoff slated for 5:30 p.m. Live video and stats coverage will be available at
