SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's basketball team tallied its first PacWest victory of the season with a convincing 85-60 victory over Notre Dame de Namur on Thursday night in the Conlan Center.
Sarah Nelson flirted with a triple-double for the second time this season. The senior center dominated the paint at both ends of the floor. She poured in a season-high 22 points and matched career-highs with 17 rebounds and eight blocks while
Allyssa Weatherd added 21 points and eight assists in a full forty-minute effort.
Despite making just one of their three-point attempts the Penguins shot 46.6 percent from the field. They attacked the paint, where they outscored the Argonauts 56-22. Dominican also forced 22 turnovers, which the Penguins converted into 15 second chance and 22 fast break points.
Lauren Hyatt added 11 points and
Danielle Yamauchi added eight points, seven assists, and five steals. Dominican's lone three-pointer came from
Kelsey McKeon, who added nine points and nine rebounds in the victory.
The first six minutes saw the game tied or the Penguins leading. Then, NDNU took a lead that lasted until the 7-minute mark when a 10-point run by the Penguins erased the deficit in less than three minutes and put Dominican back in front 26-20. A
Jessy Marshall free throw gave the Penguins a 31-24 halftime lead.
In the second half, the Penguins poured it on with 48.8 percent shooting from the floor. A McKeon three-point play extended the lead to 12 with just over 16 minutes to play, and the Penguins never led by less than nine again. The lead grew from 66-51 to 79-52 at the two-minute mark.
NDNU was led by Amy Woo's 17 points off the bench. Kirsten Liana added 10 points and 15 rebounds in the loss.
Dominican heads to Holy Names for an afternoon PacWest tilt on Saturday, Dec. 6. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m. in Oakland.
