Penguins fire on all cylinders in road win

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's basketball team came away with a big 71-60 road win on Tuesday night at Sonoma State.

Carly Holboke's 18 points and Allyssa Weatherd's 17 points gave the Penguins plenty of offense but it was a full team effort as 10 different Penguins scored in the road win. Six players came off the bench to contribute 30 of those points.

The Penguins led for nearly the full 40 minutes, with the Seawolves' only lead of the game coming on the opening basket, a layup from Madison Burroughs. Weatherd gave Dominican
the lead with a three-point play on the Penguins' opening possession and a Jessy Marshall three-pointer two trips later extended the lead to six. The lead grew to 10 thanks to free throws from Danielle Yamaguchi and Marshall, and one of Holboke's four three-pointers made it a 13-point lead. Weatherd closed out the first half with a buzzer-beater to extend the lead to 16, 41-25.

Dominican's lead grew to 20 after Yamauchi and Marshall started the second half with back-to-back layups. However, Sonoma State answered with an eight-point run to trim the lead to 12. That lead grew even tighter, to seven points, before the Penguins padded it back to 16. A Holboke free throw pushed the lead to 17. Despite Dominican scoring only two points over the final 2:40, the Seawolves only pulled within 11.

For the game, Dominican held Sonoma State to just 29.4 percent on 20-of-68 shooting. The Penguins didn't allow much penetration, which limited the Seawolves to 12 points in the paint and instead forced them to launch 30 three-pointers. Sarah Nelson, the reigning PacWest Defensive Player of the Week, continued her strong play with five blocks and 11 rebounds.

The Penguins also capitalized on turnovers, converting 17 Seawolves turnovers into 18 points.

Marshall added nine points, Yamauchi had seven points and dished out five assists, and Nelson added six. Weatherd recorded the double-double with a season-high 11 rebounds.

The Penguins will head to Humboldt State on Nov. 29 for a 7 p.m. game. The Penguins will return home after that to begin PacWest action on Dec. 4 when Notre Dame de Namur comes calling.
