Men's soccer falls at home to NDNU

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men's soccer team had its chances but came up short, 2-1, to visiting Notre Dame de Namur on Wednesday on Kennelly Field.

The Penguins fell behind early, in the 16th minute, on Jack Ewert's fifth goal of the season. The Argonauts added an insurance goal in the 47th minute when Hunter LeBlanc chipped a ball from the left side of the field and beat goalkeeper Oscar O'Con, who came off his line to defend.

Dominican got on the board in the 56th minute on a beautiful goal from Kolby Mitnick. Off a free kick, Mitnick fired a shot through the wall to cut the lead in half. He had another opportunity off a free kick in the 74th minute but NDNU Nico Chavet, who entered in the first half after starter Jay Tsuruoka departed with an injury, made an incredible save to preserve the lead. Josh Gody had a shot a minute later but Charvet was there yet again.

"The boys fought tremendously hard and put forth great effort. We went down 2-0 and fought hard to get one back," said Head Coach Phil Billeci-Gard. "Their keeper made a safe that was unbelievable. It could have gone 2-2 and been in our hands. Our record's not indicative of the quality of players that we have and we're ever so close to that first win. We'll regroup and get ready for FPU on Saturday."

Dominican hosts Fresno Pacific on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 1 p.m. as the first match of a men's-women's doubleheader. That is Breast Cancer Awareness Day. The men will wear pink jerseys, which will be auctioned off for chairty. Fans are also encouraged to wear pink to the games. It is also the University's Family Weekend, Oct. 10-12. Learn more about Family Weekend here. Live stats, video, and audio of the match will be available at www.dominicanathletics.com/live.
