Penguins drop road match to Bay Area rival ART U

San Francisco, Calif. — Despite playing a man up for more than 70 minutes, the Dominican University of California men's soccer team fell 2-0 to Academy of Art on Saturday in PacWest Conference play.

In the 17th minute, ART U (4-5-0/2-1-0 PacWest) was issued a red card. The Penguins took three shots in the first half but none were on frame and the match headed to halftime scoreless.

Jake Walter scored the game-winner, his team-leading fourth goal of the season, in the 53rd minute to put Academy of Art up 1-0. Walter received a quick touch pass from Alex Walsh, who passed it backwards to Walter, who shot from 25 yards out into the left side of the net.

Jay Eldon tacked on an insurance goal in the final minute thanks to an open net left by the Penguins. Dominican tried to pack the box on its final corner kick of the afternoon, bringing goalkeeper Erik Anderson all the way upfield, but once the Urban Knights cleared it away, Eldon was left to shoot the ball from the other side of the mid-circle and the ball rolled slowly in to make it 2-0.

Dominican had a number of chances in the second half. Of the Penguins' nine corner kicks, seven came in the second half, including four in the final five minutes. The Penguins also pressed the ART U defense with four of the team's nine shots coming in the final three and a half minutes of play. Kolby Mitnick had a shot in the final minute but it was saved by ART U goalkeeper Joshua Leader. Mitnick had three of Dominican's shots while Chris Sennes fired a pair.

Dominican has been held scoreless in six of its nine matches and its last three matches. The Penguins will look to net a win when they return home to host Notre Dame de Namur on Wednesday, Oct. 8. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. Live coverage will be available at dominicanathletics.com/live.
