Early goal doesn't hold up for women's soccer

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's soccer team was unable to hold onto an early lead in an eventual 2-1 overtime loss to visiting Fresno Pacific in PacWest action on Saturday.

Dominican starting goalkeeper Rocky Ramos made a phenomenal diving save in the 17th minute but landed harded on the shoulder that she injured in the first match of the season. The senior goalkeeper was helped off with another dislocated injury and freshman Sylvanna Islas was summoned to cover the net.

The Penguins spotted Islas a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute. A ball crossed in was misplayed by starting FPU goalkeeper Vanessa Escobar. Ivy Torres was there with the left-footed strike from about six yards out. Her shot deflected off a Sunbirds defender and rolled into the back of the net for the freshman's second goal of the season. That goal stood until the 75th minute when a ball sent down the left side from Jerrica Babb found Jay Valtierra, whose left-footed shot found the back right of the net to the match 1-1.

Both teams had looks in the remainder of regulation but were unable to convert, forcing overtime. FPU shocked the Penguins in the 97th minute. A cross from right side was deflected off a Dominican defender and a chip shot by Amber Rodriguez to far post sent FPU home with the 2-1 overtime win.

During the "Kick Out Breast Cancer" doubleheader, an auction raised over $1,000 and will be donated to Make-A-Wish Foundation.

The Penguins hit the road for a pair of matches in Southern California at Point Loma and California Baptist on Oct. 16 and 18.
