Women's basketball wins big at Chaminade for first win of season

Carly Holboke scored a career-high 19 points and the Lady Penguins won big over Chaminade on Saturday in Honolulu.
Box Score HONOLULU, Hawai'i — Carly Holboke and Salonika Quewon-Owens each scored 19 points and the Dominican University of California women's basketball team notched its first victory of the season in convincing fashion, 79-61, over Chaminade University.

Holboke came off the bench and went 7-of-10 from the field to earn her career-high. Quewon-Owens also recorded a double-double by matching a career-high 17 rebounds, dished out four assists, and had two steals. Noelle Roldan added 13 points in the victory, which snapped a 23-game losing streak dating back to last January, when the Penguins also topped Chaminade. Sarah Nelson grabbed eight rebounds and had a season-high five blocks.

Dominican (1-12/1-6 PacWest) shot 51 percent (18-of-35) in the first half and had its best game of the season from behind the three-point line. The Penguins drained a season-high nine of 20 attempts (45 percent), with three of those coming from Holboke.

The Penguins held the Silver Swords (1-9/1-3 PacWest) to 31.7 percent (19-of-60) and dominated the glass, outrebounding Chaminade 60-33 with all but one Penguin grabbing a board.

Dominican jumped out to a 5-0 lead and led by as much as eight until the Silver Swords took a 29-28 lead with 7:28 to go in the first half. An Angela Rigo three-pointer the next trip down put Chaminade up by four but Dominican answered with a 13-0 run. From there, the Penguins pushed the lead to as large as 13 and 50-38 at halftime. The second half was all Penguins, with the lead growing to as large as 21.

Kennedi Akana scored a team-high 16 points for the Silver Swords.

The Penguins head to the North Shore of Honolulu on Wednesday, Jan. 8 to face BYU-Hawaii (0-9/0-4 PacWest). Tipoff is at 5:00 p.m. in Laie, Hawai'i.
