Box Score HONOLULU, Hawai'i —
Devin Golston posted 23 points and grabbed seven rebounds but it wasn't enough for the Dominican University of California men's basketball team to hold a first-half lead, falling 75-65 at Chaminade University on Monday night in Pacific West Conference play.
Dominican (11-4/5-2 PacWest) shot 55.6 percent (15-of-27) in the first half and led by as much as 12 but ran out of steam in the second half and shot just 30 percent (9-of-30) over the final 20 minutes. The Penguins outrebounded Chaminade (6-6/3-1 PacWest) 15-11 in the first half but in the end lost the overall battle 30-23.
The Silver Swords erased the Penguins' 39-31 halftime lead with 13 minutes to go in regulation, then took the lead on a Kuany Kuany layup to make it 51-49 in favor of the Silver Swords. That was part of a 20-10 run and forced Dominican Head Coach
Booker T. Harris to call timeout.
The Penguins responded by grabbing the lead back on a pair of back-to-back three pointers by
Matt Hayes. Dominican's lead grew to six but was short lived as Chaminade tied it again at 59-59 with 5:54 to go and used a 12-point run to swing the lead into their favor, 69-59, with 3:06 to go. The Penguins would get no closer than six points the rest of the way. It didn't help matters that point guard
Myles Carrillo fouled out with 2:26 to go and
Christopher Schwartz-Edmisten fouled out with 28 seconds to play, as Dominican combined for 28 personal fouls.
Those 28 fouls also resulted in 41 free throw attempts for the Silver Swords, who took advantage by making 29. Dominican made its way to the line just 12 times, though the Penguins made 11.
Dominique Taplin added 13 points, Hayes scored 11, and
Connor Haysbert had nine points. Four other Penguins scored but had no more than three points apiece.
Kuany was one of four Silver Swords starters to reach double digits and finished with 20 points.
The Penguins head to the North Shore of Honolulu on Wednesday, Jan. 8 to face BYU-Hawaii. Tipoff is at 7:30 p.m. in Laie, Hawai'i.
