Sarah Nelson had her second double-double in three games as the Dominican University of California women's basketball team won again on Saturday night, topping visiting Chaminade University 77-53.
Winners of four of its last six games, Dominican (4-14/4-8 PacWest) kicked off its recent success at Chaminade (2-15/2-9 PacWest) with a 79-61 victory in Honolulu back on Jan. 6. Five minutes into Saturday's contest at the Conlan Center, the Penguins led by 10 points and by 11, 36-25, at the intermission. A 10-0 run spanning the last 3:44 of the first half and the first minute of the second half put the Penguins well in charge with a 42-25 advantage and left little room for doubt.
Carly Holboke gave the Penguins a strong start with three first-half three-pointers and finished with 10 points.
Quewon-Owens had 11 points in the first half and led all players on 6-of-10 shooting from the field and 7-of-8 free throw shooting. She grabbed six boards, dished out four assists, and had five steals, all while turning the ball over just once.
Nelson poured in 12 points and grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds while matching a season-high with six blocked shots. She led all all players on the glass as the Penguins dominated the boards 54-38 in the contest. A staggering 25 offensive rebounds resulted in 31 second-chance points for Dominican.
That tenacity on the defensive end also forced 18 Chaminade turnovers, which resulted in 20 more points for the Penguins.
"We're playing really well right now. Q and Sarah complement each other very well and it's paying off," said Head Coach Brianna Chambers. "The past three games, we've done a good job on focusing on the little things rather than the outcome. If we can take care of the little things, the score will take care of itself."
Dominican hits the road and will face Point Loma in San Diego on Thursday, Jan. 30 and Dixie State in St. George, Utah on Saturday, Feb. 1 as the Penguins have just eight regular season games remaining.
