Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men's soccer team proved much more aggressive in its second showing but a couple of late goals by visiting Humboldt State spoiled things on Monday afternoon, resulting in a 3-2 loss for the Penguins.
Dominican wasted no time attacking on Monday after posting just two shots in its previous outing. A nice cross from
Sam Vella was just in front of
David Mendez, then a couple of minutes later,
Swap Mushiana made another nice run but his touch was too quick on the turf and out of reach for freshman
Josh Espinoza.
Sophomore
Patrick Rabbitt made his first collegiate start and made six saves. He allowed a the game's first goal, off of a corner kick in the 55th minute. He got a glove on a ball in the 69th minute by Ryan Connor but was unlucky when the ball hit up off the post and came straight down into the net. HSU's third goal came when Chuck Pitts broke past a Dominican defender and dribbled through for an unassisted goal in the 86th minute.
The Pitts goal made it 3-1 and looked as though it would send Dominican home quietly. The Penguins battled still and
Chris Sennes answered less than a minute later with an unassisted shot from the left side.
Mendez had a chance in the 88th minute but HSU keeper Javier Torres was there to make the stop. Mendez tied the game at the 66-minute mark. He skipped a ball past the left of a diving Torres on a penalty kick, which was awarded after Mendez was tackled in the top left of the box.
Dominican also caught a break with a minute to go in the first half. Riki Michael's ball scathed past a diving Rabbitt but Michaels was called offsides, waving off the score and preserving a scoreless first half.
The Penguins have another non-conference match on Saturday, Sept. 14 versus Saint Martin's University. Kickoff is slated for 12:00 p.m. on Kennelly Field at the John F. Allen Athletics Complex, followed by the women at 2:30 p.m.. Live coverage of both games will be available at
