Box Score SAN FRANCISCO — The Dominican University of California men's soccer team allowed a pair of late goals on Monday and fell 3-1 to Academy of Art University in non-conference action.
The Urban Knights (5-3-0) scored first on Jon Eldon's goal from six yards out. The cross from Jonmundu Gretarsson was deflected by Dominican keeper
Patrick Rabbitt but the goalie was unable to hold onto the ball, resulting in an early 1-0 lead for ART U.
Dominican responded in jaw-dropping fashion when
David Mendez punted the ball from the kickoff straight into the back of the goal and over ART U goalie Luca Theis, who was positioned up field and far too high to retrieve the ball.
While the Penguins (2-5-2) went into halftime tied 1-1, a corner kick in the 68th minute gave ART U the lead again, this time for good. Kristof Urbanyi connected off of a corner to Runar Gudbjartsson, who headed it in. The Urban Knights added an insurance goal in the 87th minute by Gretarsson, who Leonardo Bartelle found after settling the rebound.
Dominican was outshot 34-6. Only 14 of ART U's shots were on goal though, while Dominican placed five of theirs on frame.
Patrick Rabbitt made four saves in the first half for Dominican.
Erik Anderson played the second half and made seven saves but was saddled with the loss.
The Penguins will look to snap their two-game skid when they return to Pacific West Conference action on Wednesday, Oct. 2 vs. Holy Names University. The men play at 4:30 p.m., with the women playing prior at 2:00 p.m. Live coverage of both matches will be available at
