Box Score VALLEJO, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men's soccer team outshot California Maritime Academy 23-5 en route to a 3-0 non-conference victory on Tuesday night.
The Penguins (2-3-2) dominated the first half with 12 shots, seven on goal, and got on the scoreboard at 11:41 when
David Mendez played a ball into
Kolby Mitnick in the right side of the box. Mitnick maneuvered around diving CMA goalkeeper Kyle Carpenter to net his first goal of the season.
On the next play, Mitnick nearly put another one in the back of the goal. Then, in the 24th minute, Mendez found Mitnick inside the box in the 24th minute and Mitnick played a nice ball in front of an empty net after Carpenter dove but there was nobody there to finish the play.
Swap Mushiana added his team-leading fourth goal of the season on a free kick in the 80th minute. The free kick was the result of a CMA foul in the box.
Despite playing without starting defenders
Sam Vella (injury) and
Chris Sennes (one-game red card suspension) the Dominican defense stepped up and held the Keelhaulers to five shots, all of which came in the second half. Cal Maritime (0-3) finally launched its first attempt in the 51st minute, a shot that drifted wide by Marshall Fice. Goalkeeper
Patrick Rabbitt was there for the save. Rabbitt earned his first career victory.
"It's always hard to go out on the road but our guys came out and competed. Kudos to Cal Maritime for giving us a fight," said Head Coach
Phil Billeci-Gard. "Now all of our focus shifts back to conference play. We'll enjoy tonight and get back to campus and preparing."
The Penguins now head south to face Fresno Pacific University on Saturday, Sept. 28 in Pacific West Conference action. Gametime is slated for 7:00 p.m. after the women's game at 5:00 p.m.
