Phil Billeci-Gard discussed his team needing to play a full 90 minutes. It turns out his Penguins tend to play 110 minutes, as the Penguins played to their second draw of the week, this time settling for a 1-1 tie with Dixie State University on Saturday afternoon in Pacific West Conference play.
"We showed a lot of character today and the boys fought hard," said Billeci-Gard. "It's not the desired result but it is a result none the less. We got better today and we'll keep moving forward."
Dominican (1-3-2/0-1-1) dominated possesion in the second half and while the Penguins set the tone with their physicality, it was both a positive and negative. The good news came in the form of
David Mendez's second goal of the season, the equalizer in the 68th minute. The Penguins were awarded a free kick after
Kolby Mitnick drove into the box and had his ankle grabbed by Dixie State goalkeeper Tyler Walters.
The bad news is that
Chris Sennes, after receiving a yellow card at the 97-minute mark, received another at the 105-minute mark, resulting in a red card which means that the Dominican defender will have to sit out the Penguins' non-conference matchup versus California Maritime Academy on Tuesday, Sept. 24.
Playing a man down the final 4:32 of the contest, Dominican held its ground and kept Dixie State from even taking a shot in the second overtime period.
Dominican had a good opportunity in overtime, though
Vini Enriquez's shot was blocked by. The ball went to
Robert Peardon, who shot quickly but Walters was there for the save.
The Penguins had a close 18-16 shot advantage, including 9-7 in shots on goals, as well as a 4-3 corner kick advantage.
The Red Storm (0-3-2/0-2-1) scored at the 34-minute mark on a 45-yard pass from Erik Shallenberger headed by Jordan Steed to the far right of the goal past Dominican keeper
Patrick Rabbitt.
Dominican returns to PacWest action on Saturday, Sept. 28 at Fresno Pacific University. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. after the women's game at 4:30 p.m.
