Pawek nets first career goal in draw with Point Loma

Stephanie Pawek scored her first collegiate goal in Thursday's draw with Point Loma.
Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's soccer team played to a 1-1 tie with Point Loma Nazarene University to begin Pacific West Conference play on Thursday.

Jessica Ramirez nearly got the Penguins (2-2-2/0-0-1) on the board with the first of the game, a one-on-one at 2:59 but Lupe Herrera was there to make the save for the Sea Lions (1-3-1/0-0-1).

Dominican took the next 10 shots, including four in a matter of seconds, the last of which resulted in the game's first goal in the 31st minute. From the top of the box, Kaitlynn Baptista reeled back and kicked a ball down the heart of the field but it was blocked by a Point Loma defender. Stephanie Pawek settled the ball but her shot struck the crossbar. She continued after the ball and took another shot, which Herrera stopped. The ball got away from the keeper though and Pawek was there yet again to put it in the back of the net for her first collegiate goal.

The Sea Lions knotted the score at 1-1 with their first shot of the game in the 35th minute. Dottie Rhoten found Natalie Swift on a pass across the goal face to the left side that forced Dominican goalie Megan Herring to challenge. Herring was unable to recover and Swift tallied her third goal of the season.

Point Loma had two more tries before the half but Herring made a stop and a Dominican defender was there to block the other.

The final 75 minutes went without a goal, though there were plenty of scoring opportunities. Lauren Gollnick had back-to-back shots saved in the 48th minute. The Sea Lions had the next four shots after another Gollinck shot in the 52nd minute, as well as another in the 86th minute that Herring saved.

Sara Pimentel nearly ended it with 26 seconds left in overtime but Herrera made yet another save. Point Loma nearly ended it with one second left in double overtime but a Rhoten's shot was saved by Herring.

The strong goalkeeping by both teams was reflected in 10 by Herrera and seven by Herring.

The Penguins outshot Point Loma 20-12, including 5-1 in double overtime. Point Loma held an 8-3 corner kick advantage.
