Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — Dominican University of California's seniors stepped up and made the big plays when they needed them on Saturday en route to the team's first victory of the season, a 2-0 non-conference shutout of Saint Martin's on Dominican Soccer Alumni Day.
Swap Mushiana set the tone early. He sent a shot wide in the first minute, then put the Penguins (1-2) ahead 1-0 in the 10th minute. The co-captain played a cross in front of the net from sophomore
Kolby Mitnick, who had a good touch off of a through ball from co-captain
David Mendez.
Mushiana doubled the lead in the 77th minute. Dominican was awarded a free kick at the top of the box as a result of Saint Martin's foul. Mushiana promptly kicked the ball past a diving JJ Olsen for his second goal of the season.
Goalkeeper
Erik Anderson had a busy day and despite being hit hard — resulting in a yellow card for the Saints — maintained the shutout with 11 saves.
Saint Martin's (0-4) did outshoot Dominican 16-7 shot and had a 6-1 corner kick advantage.
The match was physical, with 17 fouls between the two teams, and six cards, including a red card on Saint Martin's in the 88th minute.
"I'm proud of my seniors and captains. I asked them for more emotion before the game and they gave it," said Head Coach
Phil Billeci-Gard. "All three senior captains played a major role in the success of Dominican Men's Soccer today."
