Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's soccer team played to a 0-0 draw versus Western Oregon University on Thursday on Kennelly Field.
Both teams launched eight shots apiece with two on goal, while Dominican had a 6-2 corner kick advantage. Neither team got a shot off in double overtime, though Dominican (1-2-1) doubled its shot total in the first overtime period with a flurry of shot attempts.
"We battled from whistle to whistle and our defensive game and fitness level is quality at this point," said Head Coach
Tara Koleski. "There's still room for improvement on the offensive end in all of these close games. The character that we displayed today, fighting until the end of overtime, was big."
Freshman
Stephanie Pawek had a good look for the Penguins in the 94th minute from 25 yards out but it went straight into the hands of Western Oregon's keeper. She led the Penguins with three shot attempts.
In the 55th minute, freshman
Julianna Mendez had a kick off the throw-in from the top right of the box that nearly found
Jessica Hinsken, but the play was broken up by WOU keeper Amanda Rose Johnson.
Two minutes later, defender
Megan Hanson won a 50-50 ball and good ball movement from
Carrie Freyer, Mendez, and
Mckenna Kimball brought the ball across the goal face. Hinsken made a darting run and just missed the slide that would've challenged Johnson.
The Wolves' (1-0-2) best look came in the first half, only three minutes in, but Taylor Higa booted the shot wide. Taija Borgo came off the bench with four shots, one on frame, to lead Western Oregon.
The Penguins return to the pitch on Saturday, Sept. 14 as part of a doubleheader with the men's team. Both squads face Saint Martin's University. The men kickoff at noon and the women are slated to follow at 2:30 p.m. Live coverage will be available at
