Guevara, Valdez named PacWest Scholar-Athletes of the Year

PHOENIX, Ariz. — It was announced live on PacWest Radio that Dominican University of California student-athletes Pedro Guevara and Justin Valdez have been named the 2012-13 Scholar-Athlete of the Year in their respective sports.

Guevara, a graduating senior out of Montgomery High School in Santa Rosa, Calif., was named the 2012–13 PacWest Men's Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He boasted a 3.57 GPA en route to earning a degree in psychology. Guevara started all 18 games for Dominican and led the Penguins with 12 goals and was second on team with 27 points. He was named to the Capital One Academic NCAA Division II All-America® Team and All-District 8 Team, the Daktronics All-America Third Team and All-West Region First Team, the NSCAA All-West Region Second Team, and the All-PacWest First Team as a midfielder. Guevara wrapped up his illustrious career by scoring the game-winning goal in his final game as a Penguin, a 2-1 victory vs. Point Loma on Nov. 3, 2012.

Valdez, who will be a senior in the fall, was named the 2012–13 PacWest Men's Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year. A nursing major with a 3.48 GPA, he was a 2012 NCAA Division II All-Academic Cross Country honoree by USTFCCCA and was named to PacWest Academic All-Conference Team. The San Jose, Calif. native was Named PacWest Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week after being the top finishing collegiate runner in the Bronco Invitational Open 8K on Oct. 13 with a personal best 8K time of 25:40.9. Valdez finished the 2012 campaign with a 48th place finish out of 138 runners and fifth highest among PacWest competitors at the NCAA Division II West Regional Cross Country Championships in Hawai'i with a 10K time of 34:13.97.

Both student-athletes were named Dominican's Most Outstanding Player in their respective sports and both were named to PacWest Academic All-Conference Team, with Guevara becoming the first Dominican student-athlete to be named to the list four times. Guevara and Valdez were also both inducted into National College Athlete Honor Society, Chi Alpha Sigma.

Guevara and Valdez are shining examples of a Dominican student-athlete. For the fourth straight year, Dominican captured the Pacific West Conference Academic Achievement Award. Penguin student-athletes averaged a 3.34 grade point average in 2012–13.
