Box Score 2 TURLOCK, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's softball dropped two games in the Tournament of Champions presented by Mizuno on Saturday. Dominican dropped a 5-0 decision to San Francisco State and a 5-1 decision to Cal State East Bay.
Dominican's collected six, with one apiece from its one through four batters, but the Lady Penguins (6-37) could never get anything going offensively versus the Gators (15-23). Dominican threatened early and often but a run never materialized. Dominican loaded the bases with one out in the first inning, had runners on first and second in the second, and drew back-to-back walks in the third. The Lady Penguins had a runner every inning and stranded 12 in the game.
A leadoff hit was manufactured into a run in the second inning for San Francisco State. Then, in the fifth, the Gators took advantage of three walks and an errant throw with the bases loaded that would have ended the inning but instead allowed two runs to score. A leadoff walk on four consecutive pitches in the sixth led to a lone run in the fifth.
Freshman pitcher
Ashlyn Moriarity (2-18) pitched well and gave up just five hits but also walked five. Junior pitcher
Karly Harris pitched a perfect inning of relief.
Emily Gibson held Dominican to just one hit through three innings, a leadoff single in the second by junior
Rachel Santiago. The win, however, went to Ali Garcia (1-0), who pitched four shutout innings.
Against Cal State East Bay, Dominican recorded five hits but errors again proved costly. A pair of hits opened the game and a Sara Holdridge single up the middle quickly put the Pioneers (12-25) up 2-0 in the first. An error led to a run in the second and leadoff singles led to Cal State East Bay runs in the fifth and seventh innings.
Dominican looked to threaten in the sixth inning against reliever Nikki Fonteneaux. Sophomore shortstop
Kayla Rodriguez led off with a single, then swiped second for her team-best 20th steal of the season. Junior third baseman
Leslie Mesa drew a four-pitch walk and fellow junior
Kayleigh Klingberg knocked home Rodriguez. The rally was quickly halted though. Junior catcher
Dominique Perry ripped a shot up the middle but Mesa was called out at the plate. Head Coach
Sarah Iwata came out to argue to no avail and a groundout to first base subsequently ended the threat, and Dominican went quietly in the seventh.
Harris (4-19), who allowed four earned runs against Cal State East Bay, was charged with the loss despite her complete-game effort. Lauren Zweigle (8-13) picked up the win after pitching five innings of two-hit softball for the Pioneers.
The Lady Penguins are right back at it on the final day of the Tournament of Champions in the Platinum Bracket vs. Cal State East Bay on Sunday, March 7. That game will be held on field one at Turlock Regional Sports Complex with first pitch slated for 8:30 a.m. Live stats will be available at
