Moriarity dominates NNU, drops pitcher's duel to UC San Diego

Ashlyn Moriarity pitched 12 strong innings in three games on Friday and picked up a win against NNU.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 TURLOCK, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's softball team went 1-2 on the first day of the Tournament of Champions presented by Mizuno, recording a 10-1 win over Northwest Nazarene University in five innings, dropping a 9-1 decision in five innings to Cal State Dominguez Hills, and a 1-0 pitchers' duel to UC San Diego.

In game one, the Lady Penguins (6-35) fell behind 1-0 early to NNU (5-30) but, after allowing the RBI single to catcher Michelle Crumbaker, freshman pitcher Ashlyn Moriarity settled down and scattered just three hits as she went the distance for her second win of the season.

Offensively, Dominican bounced right back with a pair of runs in the first, then broke the game open with a five-run second inning, and put it out of reach with two more runs in the third, and one more in the fourth. Every Dominican starter reached base and seven different players scored a run. Sophomore shortstop Kayla Rodriguez was 3-for-4 with three runs and an RBI. Freshman outfielder Tori Johnson went 3-for-3 with a run. Junior second baseman Kayleigh Klingberg went 2-for-2 with a pair of runs and four RBI. Designated player Samantha Talavera went 2-for-3 with three RBI.

After the offensive outburst against NNU, the Lady Penguins were nearly no-hit by Cal State Dominguez Hills (20-15). Junior catcher Dominque Perry was hit by a pitch for the eight time this season, which leads her team, to begin the top of the fifth inning. Talavera proceeded to break up Lauren Harper's no-hit bid with a sharp double to right center. Freshman Sarah McKenzie, who pinch ran for Perry, then scored on a dropped fly ball to right field to break up the shutout.

In game three, Moriarity battled UC San Diego pitchers Jennifer Manuel and Hannah Duarte in a pitchers' duel. Moriarity allowed just three hits in another complete game effort while Manual allowed two hits, and Duarte pitched three perfect innings of relief for her first win of the season. Neither team had more than one baserunner in a frame until the sixth inning. Emily McQuaid walked and advanced to second on a groundout, then stole third. Designated Nicole Spangler then drove i the winning run for the Tritons (22-15), a chopper just over the head of Moriarity that trickled into the outfield grass. Dominican threatened in the fourth with Johnson's leadoff double but she was later picked off a third to end the threat.

"Ashlyn pitched really well today. She hit her spots and had everything working," said Head Coach Sarah Iwata. "Defensively, for the most part, we backed up our pitchers and communicated well. We had some timely hitting and it was a good team effort today."

Dominican faces two familiar CCAA teams in San Francisco State and Cal State East Bay on Saturday, March 6 in day two of the Tournament of Champions. Dominican is 2-1 against the Gators and split twice with the Pioneers this season. Live stats will be available at www.dominicanathletics.com/live.
