Softball gets back in win column at SF State

Dominique Perry launched her first homer of the season as the Lady Penguins got back into the win column vs. SF State on Sunday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAN FRANCISCO — The Dominican University of California women's softball team didn't rely on luck on Saturday in a non-conference St. Patrick's Day doubleheader at San Francisco State. Instead, after leaving the bases loaded in the seventh inning of a tough 3-0 game one loss, the Lady Penguins rallied back for a 3-1 victory in game two thanks to solid pitching and timely hitting.

The Gators (13-12) struck early with a run in the first inning of game one, then added back-to-back runs in the third and fourth to secure game one. Marisa Ibarra  (10-4) scattered five hits and struck out seven without issuing a walk en route to the complete game victory for SFSU. Dominican (5-21), which left seven baserunners on in the game, saw its best chance at scoring in the top of the seventh. With one out, the Lady Penguins loaded the bases on three consecutive singles but Ibarra induced fly balls to work her way out of trouble.

Junior pitcher Karly Harris (4-11), who took the game one loss, pitched much more efficiently in game two. She allowed six hits and issued just one walk in the complete game effort in game two, which helped to snap a 16-game skid for Dominican. It was Harris' second win against the Gators this season.

"Karly was very effective in the circle," said Head Coach Sarah Iwata. "She was sitting her pitches a little high in the first game, then came back and made the mental and physical adjustments to get the win in game two."

Harris was backed by Dominican's offense, which was much more aggressive and tallied 10 hits in the nightcap. In the fourth, Junior Dominique Perry launched a solo shot, her first of the season, to center field to tie it at 1-1. Junior Kayleigh Klingberg's team-leading 15th RBI made it 2-1 on a double to right that scored freshman Ashlyn Moriarity all the way from first. The Lady Penguins added an insurance run in the seventh. Moriarity led the inning off with a double and scored on junior Rachel Santiago's single to right center.

The Gators' lone run in game two came in the third when SFSU went up 1-0 on a singles from Lucy Fernandez. Emily Gibson (3-6) took the loss for the Gators despite also tossing a complete game. The Gator's leading hitter, shortstop Casey Gravel (.338), went just 1-for-6 against Dominican pitching on the day.

"The girls fought hard every pitch and never got down. They maade adjustments at the plate," Iwata said. "The offense, defense, and pitching all came together. Everyone contributed today."

Sophomore Leslie Mesa recorded a hit in each game and has reached base safely her last six games. She's batting a team-best .320.

On Thursday, March 21, Dominican heads to Alden E. Oliver Field in Hayward, Calif. to play Holy Names University in another Pacific West Conference doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 2:00 p.m.
