Box Score AZUSA, Calif. — Four Dominican University of California women's basketball players scored in double digits. However, the Lady Penguins couldn't hang onto the lead and fell 73-62 to fourth place Azusa Pacific University in Pacific West Conference play on Wednesday night.
Lauren Hyatt started the game with a basket for two of her team-high 14 points and the Lady Penguins (5-16/4-9) led 8-0 barely four minutes into action. The Lady Penguins led the entire half and despite the lead slipping to just a point, maintained a five-point halftime lead, 34-29, thanks in part to 16-of-33 first half shooting.
Dominican fended off the Cougars (11-8/8-3) in the second half but finally relinquished the lead with 9:48 to go in regulation when Amanda Sims' jumper gave APU the lead, 49-48. Dominican took the lead back on a pair of
Stephanie Carnes free throws and a three-point play by
Noelle Roldan kept things even at 53-53 until a layup from Kelly Hardemann gave APU the lead for good, 55-53, with six and a half minutes to go. From there, the Cougars built the lead to as large as 13 and outscored Dominican 20-9 down the final stretch.
Kimi Nakamura added 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting. Salonika-Quewon Owens and
Sarah Nelson each added 10 points. Quewon-Owens pulled down a team-high seven rebounds and dished out four assists.
Jasmine Cox added six points, six rebounds, and five steals.
Hannah Kenny led the Cougars with 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting. Hardemann added 17 points and Amanda Sims chipped in 10 points.
Dominican will look to bounce back from their road trip when it hosts Dixie State College on Monday, Feb. 11, which is also Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night. The first 50 Dominican faculty and staff to attend Monday night's games will receive a free t-shirt. Additionally, there will be raffles throughout the evening for Dominican Athletics shirts and other gear. Athletics staff will also be distributing coupons to faculty and staff good for a free beverage with any purchase at the snack bar.
