Complete game efforts spoiled by Cal State Stanislaus

Ashlyn Moriarity's three-hit complete game was spoiled by CSUS' combined one-hitter.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MORAGA, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's softball team had two complete game pitching efforts on Wednesday but came up short in both games of a non-conference doubleheader vs. Cal State Stanislaus, 2-1 and 2-0.

An error-filled first would do Dominican (2-4) in early. Junior pitcher Karly Harris surrendered a leadoff single to the Warriors' (4-2) Brittani Weatherford. A bunt to third was misplayed, which allowed Sarah Locarnini to reach while Weatherford advanced to third. Cierrah Mullins hit an RBI single to left which scored Weatherford, than Locarnini scored on an another error at third base. Harris escaped further trouble by inducing a double play ball.

The Lady Penguins rallied in the fifth. Tori Johnson singled to left center, then advanced to second on a Kayla Rodriguez sacrifice bunt. Kayleigh Klingberg continued her hot start to the season with a two-out RBI double to center field but was stranded to end the threat.

Harris escaped trouble yet again in the sixth with runners on first and second. Then, Dominican chased Weatherford (2-1) by loading the bases in the sixth but Randee Hindman came in and induced a groundout to short. She worked out of trouble again when Dominican threatened in the seventh with a pair of walks to Kayla Rodriguez and Klingberg but the duo was left stranded in scoring position.

Harris was charged with a loss for the first time this season to bring her record on the early season to 2-1 while Weatherford improved to 2-1. Hindman earned the save in both games.

In game two, both pitchers carried no-hitters into the fifth inning. Dominican's Ashlyn Moriarity finally surrendered a leadoff hit in the fifth but pinch runner Ghianna Falconi was picked off and Moriarity worked out of the frame.

A walk followed by a double got things going for the Warriors, who went on to score two runs in the frame. That lead would stand, as Dominican was no-hit until the seventh inning when Klingberg, who went 2-for-5 on the day, broke up the no-no with a leadoff single up the middle.

Moriarity was tagged with another tough loss and fell to 0-3 despite giving up just three hits while striking out six in her complete game effort.

“Other than a handful of plays, we played very well. These are all fixable things that we can learn from,” said Head Coach Sarah Iwata. “Our pitchers pitched extremely well and got better and better as they got deeper into the game.”

Dominican hosts Cal State East Bay on Saturday, Feb. 9. The games are slated for 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. at College of Marin in Kentfield. Live stats will be available at www.dominicanathletics.com/live.
