Men's basketball limits turnovers in victory over Point Loma

Devin Golston scored nine consecutive points en route to Dominican's 68-62 victory on Saturday night.
Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men's basketball team was far from its sharpest on Saturday but limited itself to just three turnovers — the team's fewest in the NCAA Division II era — in a 68-62 Pacific West Conference victory over Point Loma.

The Penguins (8-2/2-0) had an abysmal first half of shooting, going just 8-of-29 (.276) from the field. The Dominican defense allowed just six field goals at the other end as Point Loma (5-3/1-2) shot just 28.6 percent.

The Penguins opened the game just 2-for-11 from the field, which allowed the Sea Lions to claim an early five-point lead. The Penguins steadied the ship at the nine-minute mark when Devin Golston scored nine consecutive Dominican points, which tied the ballgame at 13-13. Dominican grabbed the lead on a pair of Matt Hayes free throws to make it 15-13 and the Penguins would never relinquish the lead.

After leading 27-21 at intermission, Dominican's lead grew to as large as 13 in the second half thanks to 15-of-31 (.484) field goal shooting and strong free throw shooting. The Penguins went 11-of-13 from the charity stripe in the second period and 17-of-24 overall.

"Luckily they also missed a few shots early on and we were able to rebound and get some transition baskets," said Dominican Head Coach Booker T. Harris. "It came down to us controlling the tempo We didn't score in the paint particularly well but the guys managed to get stops when it mattered."

Golston led Dominican with 18 points and had a game-high nine rebounds. Hayes added 12 points while Dominique Taplin added 11 points, four of which came on a pair of athletic slam dunks that delighted the Conlan Center crowd. Senior center Connor Haysbert added 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Senior point guard Myles Carrillo and sophomore swingman Karl Ohrner each added six points apiece.

Point Loma's Hayden Lescault led all players with 19 points. Marek Klassen added 18 points in the loss.

The Penguins debuted their new gold adidas uniforms, marking the first time in over a decade that the men's basketball team has worn gold uniforms.

Dominican will hit the road for its first PacWest road game of the season versus Academy of Art University on Saturday, Dec. 14. Tipoff is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. at Kezar Pavilion.
