Devin Golston scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds in Saturday's victory over FPU.
Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — Four starters scored in double digits and the Dominican University of California men's basketball team finished the calendar year by squeezing out a 66-63 victory over Fresno Pacific University in Pacific West Conference action.

Devin Golston led the Penguins (10-3/4-1) with a 16-point effort with 14 of those points coming in the second half. Myles Carrillo and Dominique Taplin each shot 5-of-10 from the field and finished with 14 and 13 points, respectively. Connor Haysbert added 12 points in the victory. Taplin led the Penguins with nine rebounds, Golston grabbed seven boards, and Haysbert pulled down six.

The Penguins shot poorly in the first half (12-of-32, 37.5%) but led 27-23 at the break. In the second half, they went 13-for-21 (61.9%) to shoot a 47.2% clip. Dominican held the Sunbirds to 35.4% (23-for-65) in the game.

FPU used a nine-point run to take a brief five-point lead in the second half. The Penguins answered with a 12-2 run to take back the lead and push the gap to 10. That lead proved important as Dominican's only made basket in the final four minutes came in the way of a goaltending call on a Golston field goal attempt.

Malcolm Griffin led all players with 21 points for FPU (5-7/0-4).

"It's nice to have the strong start that we've had and get that win before the break," said Head Coach Booker T. Harris. "We'll take some time to enjoy the holidays and then we'll return to work and prepare for our upcoming road trip."

Dominican will begin 2014 in Hawai'i with a three-game spell beginning Jan. 4 at UH Hilo.
