Missed opportunities cost women's basketball at CBU

Lauren Hyatt matched season-high with 15 points in Wednesday's loss at CBU.
Box Score RIVERSIDE, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's basketball team's shooting woes continued as the Penguins fell 78-65 at California Baptist University in Wednesday evening's Pacific West Conference matchup.

The Penguins (0-10/0-4) are now shooting .324 on the season after shooting just 22-for-61 (.361) from the field on Wednesday. Dominican scored 30 points in the paint and collected 18 more at the free throw line. While the Penguins had plenty of good looks around the basket, it was a staggering 32 shots around the rim that made the difference in the game. On the season, Dominican is now shooting .324 from the field.

Conversely, CBU (3-7/1-3) pulled away on the strength of its three-point shooting. The Lancers went 12-for-28 (.429) from deep, with four coming from Kamille Diaz. She led CBU with 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting.

The Lancers led by 12 with seven minutes to go in the first half but the Penguins remained within striking distance by getting to the foul line and knocking down 11-of-12 free throws to eventually pull even, 28-28, on a pair of makes from Lauren Hyatt. Dominican went ahead by a basket though CBU (3-7/1-3) answered to take a 35-33 halftime lead.

The Penguins trailed by just five points with 13 minutes to go in regulation but a 20-10 Lancers run over the next five minutes brought the deficit to 15. The Penguins would pull within nine points but would never get any closer the rest of the way.

Hyatt matched a season-high with a game-high 15 points with all 15 points coming in the first half. Salonika Quewon-Owens added 13 points and Jessy Marshall scored 10 points. Jasmine Cox and Danielle Yamauchi each added six points in the loss.

Dominican closes out the calendar year at home in the Conlan Center on Saturday, Dec. 21 vs. Fresno Pacific University. Tipoff versus the Sunbirds (1-8/1-2) is slated for 5:30 p.m. with live coverage available at dominicanathletics.com/live.
