Box Score SAN FRANCISCO — The Dominican University of California women's basketball team built a first-half lead but struggled in the second half as the Penguins fell 59-43 to Academy of Art University in Pacific West Conference play at Kezar Pavilion on Saturday night.
Salonika Quewon-Owens led all players with 14 points and 12 rebounds,
Lauren Hyatt scored nine points and pulled down 10 rebounds before exiting at the six-minute mark with five fouls, and
Jasmine Cox added nine points and nine rebounds in the loss.
Those three players went a combined 12-for-23 but as a team Dominican (0-9/0-3) went just 17-for-60 from the field.
The game began with an administrative foul resulting in a
Jessy Marshall free throw and 1-0 Dominican lead before the tip. The Dominican lead stood at 22-18 by halftime and lasted until 15-minute mark in the second half.
As a team, Dominican built a lead thanks in large part to strong rebounding, outrebounding the Urban Knights 33-20 at the half. That gap tightened in the second half though and set the tone the rest of the way. While the Penguins still held the final advantage on the glass, 39-36, the Penguins pulled down just six rebounds in the entire second half. Coupled with a season-high 28 turnovers resulting in 27 ART U points, the home team was able to rally in the second half.
The Urban Knights (5-4/3-0) also improved their shooting, going 14-of-29 (.483), after being held to 7-of-38 (.184) shooting in the first half.
An Alisa Griggs (12 points) jumper gave the Urban Knights their first lead, 24-23, which grew to 33-23 before a
Danielle Yamauchi basket snapped a 14-0 run. From there, the deficit grew to as large as 22.
Dominican will head to California Baptist University in Riverside, Calif. for another PacWest contest on Wednesday, Dec. 18. Tipoff versus the Lancers (2-7/0-3) is slated for 5:00 p.m.
