Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's basketball team jumped out to an early lead but the sharp shooting of No. 17 Chico State spoiled the Penguins' season debut in an 88-60 loss at the Conlan Center.
Dominican staked a nine-point lead nine minutes into action on baskets by
Salonika Quewon-Owens,
Sarah Nelson, and
Carly Holboke. The nationally-ranked Wildcats show why when they evened the game at the four-minute mark of the first half, 27-27, on one of Jazmine Miller's five three-pointers. Miller, who ended up with 20 points, buried another one to give Chico State the lead. Dominican tied it up at 31-31 on a Quewon-Owens layup but another Miller three-ball and a pair of Chico State free throws sent Dominican into the locker room by five.
Sarah Nelson dumped in a basket to lead off the second half and a
Danielle Yamauchi tied it with a three-pointer 38 seconds later at 36-36. The Wildcats responded though with a 10-point run and Dominican would never get close again. The Wildcats led for the final 18:46 and didn't allow the Penguins closer than seven points the rest of the way.
Three Penguins scored 10 points apiece — Quewon-Owens,
Noelle Roldan, and
Carly Holboke. Nelson and Yamauchi added six points apiece. Quewon-Owens led all players with nine rebounds.
Dominican shot .431 (22-of-51) from the field but took 13 less field goal attempts than Chico State and was outscored 45-26 in the paint.
Four Wildcats reached double digits, led by Hannah Womack's 23 points. Miller scored 20 points on 7-of-8 shooting, including 5-of-6 from deep. Analise Riezebos added 18 points and McKenzie Dalthorp had 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Guard Courtney Hamilton dished out 11 assist for Chico State.
Dominican returns to the hardwood on Wednesday, Nov. 13 when they head to the University of San Francisco for an exhibition. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m. at War Memorial Gym on the USF campus.
