Box Score CHICO, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men's basketball team saw its historic six-game winning streak halted in an 86-56 loss to Chico State on Friday night at Acker Gymnasium in the first night of the 54th Annual Mac Martin Tourney.
It was the first loss of the sesaon for the Penguins (6-1), who set a school record by opening the season with six consecutive victories and entered the game averaging 91.7 points per game. On Friday, Dominican watched helplessly as Chico State (3-1) sank three-pointer after three-pointer. When the Wildcats weren't making their shots, they were rebounding. For the night, the Wildcats went 29-of-55 from the field, including 12-of-27 from deep, and outrebounded the Penguins 37-20, 15 of which came at the offensive end.
Dominican trailed 42-23 at halftime and the situation didn't improve in the second half. The Wildcats recorded a three-point play on the opening possession of the second half to extend the lead to 22. Dominican's rebounding woes continued in the second half as Chico State snagged seven of the first eight boards in the second half. At one point in the second half, Chico State had more offensive rebounds than Dominican had total (12-11).
Still, the Penguins managed four players in double digits.
Matt Hayes led the club with 13 points, followed by a dozen from
Connor Haysbert.
Myles Carrillo and
Dominique Taplin each added 10 points in the loss.
Devin Golston, who had reached double digits in his first six games and entered averaging 16.7 points per game, was held scoreless for the first time in his Dominican career.
Five Wildcats reached double digits on the night. Giordano Estrada led all players with 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting, all from behind the three-point line.
Dominican will face San Francisco State on Saturday, Nov. 30 in the third game of the Mac Martin Tourney. The Gators, who — like the Penguins — received votes in the most recent NCAA Division II men's basketball poll, fell 101-96 to No. 9 Seattle Pacific earlier in the night.
