Penguins extend win streak to six in wire-to-wire win over Cal State Monterey Bay

Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — Dominique Taplin scored the game's first basket and the Dominican University of California men's basketball team led wire-to-wire en route to the Penguins' 86-76 win over Cal State Monterey Bay on Tuesday evening.

The victory extended the Penguins' win streak to a program-best sixth in a row to open the season while the Otters were handed their first loss to fall to 2-1.

Devin Golston went 9-of-13 for 19 points and secured 10 rebounds for a double double. The Penguins were led by Myles Carrillo, who had six points at the half but went 10-for-10 at the free throw line to finish with 21 points. Connor Haysbert and Matt Hayes each added 11 points in the win.

Dominican led 40-33 at halftime on 16-of-31 (.516) shooting. The Penguins didn't cool off in the second half and in fact got even hotter, going 13-of-25 (.520) over the final 20 minutes.

The Penguins opened with the first five points of the second half to take their largest lead of the game, 12, but never allowed the Otters to get closer than seven.

"Tonight was a good win, it was a team win. We really executed our gameplan to perfection We controlled the game right from the tipoff and didn't allow any runs," said Carrillo. "Hopefully we can take this momenntum and carry it through the weekend."

Cal State Monterey Bay was led by Ryan Nitz's 22 points. Devin Murphy added 12 points and Alex Fertig added 10 points.

Dominican heads to the Mac Martin Tournament hosted by Chico State on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 29 and 30. The Penguins face the host Wildcats at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, followed by a 5:30 p.m. game on Saturday versus San Francisco State.
