Scoring flurry doesn't go men's soccer's way at NDNU

Box Score BELMONT, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men's soccer team's 2013 team came to an end on Saturday with a 4-3 Pacific West Conference loss to rival Notre Dame de Namur University.

Freshman Lee LeVerrier cleared a ball, then found senior David Mendez to give the Penguins (4-12-2/2-9-1) the early 1-0 advantage. Armando Garcia tied it in the 41st minute though with a run on a ball from Omar Herrera from the midfield and a goal to the far post.

The second half erupted with scoring. The Argos established a 4-1 lead with a flurry of goals in the 66th, 74th, and 78th minutes that left the Penguins reeling. Still, Dominican battled back as they have all season. Senior Jordan Rode ignited the Penguins with his first goal of the season in the 82nd minute off of a pass by Kolby Mitnick, then three minutes later Vini Enriquez tapped a loose ball in front of the net to Swap Mushiana to pull the Penguins within a goal, 4-3. The Penguins managed one more shot, a shot that sailed wide by freshman Alex Herrera, before time expired.

It was a season that could have gone either way for first-year Head Coach Phil Bilecci-Gard's squad. The breaks didn't go the Penguins' way though, as 11 of the Penguins' 18 games were decided by a goal or less. In those games, Dominican went just 1-9-2.

The Penguins graduate six players, including two of their top three goal scorers, Mendez (5) and Mushiana (6), as well as starting defender Sam Vella.
