Salonika Quewon-Owens had a career game with 22 points and 17 rebounds, both career highs, but the Dominican University of Califorina women's basketball team fell 71-59 to Humboldt State on Sunday in the PacWest/CCAA Challenge at Kezar Pavilion.
Quewon-Owens went 8-of-15 from the field and added six free throws. She pulled down nearly half of her team's 37 rebounds, including seven on the offensive end, and added four steals, two steals, and two blocks while committing just one turnover. For her efforts, Quewon-Owens was named to the PacWest/CCAA Challenge All-Tournament Team.
As a team though, the Penguins (0-3) shot just 20-of-68 (.294) from the floor. Dominican's defense kept them in it early, forcing 11 first-half Humboldt State (3-1) turnovers and 20 in the game.
The Penguins started the game on a 6-0 run.
Jessy Marshall (seven points) scored,
Lauren Hyatt (five points) made a free throw, and
Carly Holboke (five points) buried a three-pointer. The game remained close with both teams grabbing the lead until 1:29 left in the half, when the Lumberjacks secured the lead for good, 25-24, on a Kersey Wilcox jumpber. From there, HSU built a 29-24 halftime lead.
HSU picked up where it left off and quickly extended the lead to 10. A bucket by
Melissa Boscarino (four points) whittled the lead to 39-37 with 13:45 left but HSU built the lead back to as large as 16 in the game.
Dominican held Wilcox to 1-of-7 shooting but she made it to the free throw line 12 times, where she was perfect on the night, and finished with a team-high 14 points. Wilcox was also named to the All-Tournament Team. Jae Shun and Kelly Kime both went 4-of-6 from the field for 12 points apiece and Megan Shields added 10 points. Elle Anderson let the Lumberjacks with 15 rebounds.
The Penguins will head to Alaska for three games as part of the North Star Invitational hosted by Univeristy of Alaska Fairbanks from Nov. 28 to 30.
