SAN FRANCISCO — The Dominican University of California women's basketball team hung with University of San Francisco for a half but poor shooting led to a 96-59 loss in exhibition play to the Division I Dons.
The Penguins jumped out to a 7-2 lead on five straights points from
Noelle Roldan and a bucket from
Jessy Marshall. Dominican held to the lead until the 15-minute mark when Taj Winston buried a three-pointer to give the Dons the lead for good.
Winston went 10-for-17 in the game and led all players with 26 points, which would have been a career-high, and 11 rebounds. Jamie Katuna came off the bench to add 19 points. Taylor proctor added 15 points. Paige Spietz also had a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
USF proved too much inside and outscored Dominican 42-24. The Dons pulled down 60 rebounds in the game, compared to Dominican's 36, including 19 offensive rebounds that were converted into 23 second-chance points. Consistent shooting in the first half (15-of-35, .429) helped the Penguins stay close but they cooled off dramatically in the final 20 minutes (9-of-34, .265) and didn't make any of their nine long-range attempts in the second half.
Roldan led the Penguins with 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting. The Dominican bench accounted for 24 points, led by senior
Lauren Hyatt, also with a team-best 11 points. Freshman sharpshooter
Carly Holboke had an off night from the field with just one three pointer but made all three of free throw attempts to finish with six points.
Quewon-Owens had eight points to go along with a team-high 12 rebounds and four steals.
Sarah Nelson added nine points and Marshall scored seven, all in the first half.
