Men's soccer falls to ART U after Anderson injured

Erik Anderson (right) made the save in the 84th minute but was forced out of the game after collding with Jon Eldon (30).
Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men's soccer team played 79 minutes of spirited play before being handed an unlucky 1-0 loss to Academy of Art University on Sunday in Pacific West Conference action.

The 79th minute marked an aggressive play by both teams — the Urban Knights' Andrew launched a shot that Dominican's Erik Anderson lept up to save. While Anderson made the save, his only one of the match, he collided hard with Jon Eldon who came charging in for another shot. A scary moment ensued as Anderson was tended to by the athletic training staff. He was eventually brought off the field on a stretcher and was taken to the hospital for monitoring. The concern for their teammate was apparent on the faces of every Penguin player, though it was later learned that Anderson is expected to be ok. That also forced Patrick Rabbitt to quickly jump into action in Anderson's absence.

In the 83rd minute, after Joshua Godoy's shot was blocked, an ART U (6-4-0/3-2-0) counterattack delivered yet another blow to the Penguins' morale. Jonmundu Gretarsson dribbled through the Dominican defense and drew Rabbitt out. The keeper was unable to guess correctly and Gretarsson found the goal.

The Penguins (3-6-2/1-3-1), who fell 3-1 to the Urban Knights  in a non-conference contest on Monday, had most of their back line in place after players served card-related suspensions. Though they were still without senior co-captain Sam Vella, who had to sit after receiving his fifth yellow card in Wednesday's victory over Holy Names.

Offensively, the Penguins looked much more in command on Sunday after being outshot by a ratio of nearly 6-1 in the two teams' previous matchup. The Penguins controlled possession most of the first half and outshot ART U 4-1, and finished the game being outshot just 7-6.

Dominican's Chris Sennes, who was one of those players who missed Monday's contests, threatened twice in the second half. His shot in the 75th minute was saved and his header in the 87th minute went high over the net.

The Penguins now leave for a weeklong swing through the Hawaiian islands for four games. The first of three games on Oahu begins on the island's North Shore at BYU-Hawaii on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 12:30 p.m. The trip concludes on Saturday, Oct. 19 at UH Hilo.
