Men's soccer goes toe-to-toe with first-place Azusa Pacific, comes up short on Senior Day

Dominican's six seniors were honored in a pregame ceremony before their final home match on Saturday.
Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — It wasn't the way he hoped to send his student-athletes out on Senior Day, but Head Coach Phil Billeci-Gard was proud of the way the Dominican's University of California men's soccer team performed in Saturday's 1-0 loss to first-place Azusa Pacific University.

"While it obviously wasn't the result that we were looking for, this was the best we've played the entire season," said Billeci-Gard. "That's the first-place team in the PacWest over there and we matched their intensity and we were in it until the final buzzer."

The Cougars (11-4-0/8-1-0) got the jump on the Penguins (4-11-2/2-8-1) in the fourth minute. Trenton Titus played a ball to Keyran Kelly, who squared up the goal for a 1 v. 1 situation and slipped the ball past a diving Patrick Rabbitt.

Outside of the goal, the Penguins matched Azusa Pacific. Both teams had six shots and four corner kicks, though the Cougars placed four of those shots on goal to Dominican's two. Those two shots came from senior co-captains Swap Mushiana and Sam Vella

A pregame ceremony, in front of the team's largest crowd of the season, honored seniors Robin Goldschmidt, David Mendez, Mushiana, Jordan Rode, John Sansone, and Vella.

The Penguins conclude the 2013 campaign at Notre Dame de Namur University next Saturday, Nov. 2. Kickoff is slated for 11:00 a.m. in Belmont, Calif.
