Box Score KANEOHE, Hawai'i — The Dominican University of California men's soccer team is far too familiar with close games over the course of the 2013 season. Five of the Penguins' 14 matches have been decided by one goal, with the Penguins coming out on top just once in those contests. Two more matches ended in ties. The Penguins' most recent loss came in a heartbreaking 2-1 double overtime loss to Pacific West Conference opponent Hawai'i Pacific University.
The Penguins (4-8-2/2-5-1) struck first on
Kolby Mitnick's goal in the 14th minute. The goal was the fifth of the season for the junior, who took the team lead with the score. Senior
David Mendez added his team-leading third assist of the season on the play. Mendez found Mitnick on a give-and-go, then Mitnick split two defenders to give Dominican the early lead.
HPU (7-3-2/5-1-1) knotted things late in the 83rd minute on Felipe Silva's goal. Erik Kemsies gave him the ball and Silva turned inside the box, placing the ball just under the crossbar.
That forced extra time and the host team ended things with just over two minutes to play in double overtime. Alejandro Porras' corner kick found Jimmy Baggett, who connected with Brais Garcia, who scored the game winner with his header.
The Penguins took their lead in the first half despite being outshot 8-1, then played even in the second half at 10-10. However, the Sea Warriors outshot the Penguins 5-0 in the second half. HPU also had a 10-3 corner kick advantage.
The Penguins will look to split the road trip on Saturday when they hop islands to face UH Hilo. Kickoff is slated for 3:00 p.m. HST as part of a doubleheader with the women, who play first at 12:30 p.m. The Vulcans have hit a bit of a rough patch.
