Box Score HONOLULU, Hawai'i — A perfect road trip to Hawai'i eluded the Dominican University of California women's basketball team as a late lead didn't hold up in a 61-54 loss to Hawai'i Pacific University at the Blaisdell Center on Wednesday night.
The Lady Penguins (4-9/3-2) trailed 32-26 at the half but kept the lead from growing larger than nine thanks to a three-pointer and pair of free throws from
Jessy Marshall before intermission.
A
Kimi Nakamura basket opened the second half and cut the HPU (7-3/3-1) lead to four. After the Sea Warriors responded with a bucket, four straight points from
Lauren Hyatt cut the lead to two with 17 minutes to go. Another Marshall three-pointer gave Dominican its first lead of the game with 13:40 to go but Ieva Nagy answered with a three-pointer of her own for HPU to take the lead right back. Dominican regained the lead twice more but played even or from behind in the final six minutes.
Tied at 52, HPU rattled off four straight points to build a small lead. A pair of Hyatt free throws put the lead back to two but that's the last time Dominican would score. The Lady Penguins offense went 0-for-6 in the final four minutes and four points from Susannah Walmsley and a free throw from Melody Ladrido put things out of reach.
HPU won its third straight head-to-head matchup with Dominican thanks to a 20-point night from Walmsley, who went 7-of-8 (.875), including a pair of three pointers, and five steals. Nagy and Ladrido added 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Hyatt scored a season-high 15 points and pulled down six rebounds.
Sarah Nelson added eight points and a team-high nine rebounds. Marshall added eight points and
