Nakamura’s career night from deep not enough as Lady Penguins fall in OT

Kimi Nakamura's six three-pointers were the most made in one game by the senior guard.
Box Score BELMONT, Calif. — Senior guard Kimi Nakamura had a career-night from behind the three-point arc but the Dominican University of California women's basketball team fell 70-68 in overtime at Notre Dame de Namur University on Saturday evening.

It was a costly loss for the Lady Penguins (5-12/4-5), who are fighting for the sixth and final spot in the PacWest Championships to be held at Azusa Pacific University March 7–9.

A pair of three balls by Nakamura helped Dominican build an early eight-point advantage in the first half. The lead dipped to one but another Nakamura three kept the lead at arm's length. Back-to-back buckets from Salonika Quewon-Owens and a layup by Noelle Roldan pushed the lead back to eight with 2:57 to go before the break. A 7-2 run by the Argos (3-14/2-7) in the final minute swung the momentum into the home team's favor and Dominican led just 33-30 at intermission.

The Argonauts tied it quickly at 36 but Kimi Nakamura drained her fifth three-pointer of the game to put Dominican immediately back in front. The lead exchanged hands the rest of regulation.  After giving Dominican a 57-55 advantage, Sarah Nelson, the team's leading scorer and rebounder, was held scoreless for the final six minutes of regulation and to the point that she fouled out in overtime. Stephanie Carnes' lone basket of the night and and a Jasmine Cox free throw put Dominican up three with just under four minutes to go but free throws at the other end tied it for the Argos. Neither team scored in the final two minutes of regulation, sending the game into overtime tied at 60-60.

In overtime, NDNU built a four-point lead but a Jessy Marshall basket and a Quewon-Owens rebound set up a final possession for Dominican that ultimately came up short.

Trisha Malaspina led the Argos with 15 points of 13-of-17 free throw shooting and seven rebounds. Tess Dominguez added 12 points while two others added 11 points.

Nakamura made six three-pointers, which was a single-game career high for her. She led all players with 20 points.

Quewon-Owens injected herself into every aspect of the game. She scored 13 points, including 5-of-6 at the free throw line, pulled down nine rebounds, dished out five assists, had three steals, and a block.

Nelson finished her night with eight points, five rebounds, four steals, and three blocks as she looks to stay among the nations' leaders in NCAA Division II blocked shots.

Jasmine Cox had six points and led all players with 10 rebounds.

Dominican will look to bounce back at home on Tuesday, Jan. 29 when it hosts Fresno Pacific University. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m. at the Conlan Center. Live coverage will be available at www.dominicanathletics.com/live.
