Lady Penguins can't keep pace with BYU-Hawaii

Sarah Nelson led Dominican with 17 points in Monday's loss to BYU-Hawaii.
Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. —  Sophomore Sarah Nelson netted a team-high 17 points, but she was the only Dominican University of California player to make more shots than she missed on Monday night as the Lady Penguins dropped a 90-71 decision to BYU-Hawaii in Conlan Center.

With her best scoring performance since a career-high 26 points on Nov. 17, Nelson connected on 8-of-13 field goal tries.  Dominican's 6-foot-4 center also had two blocked shots and two assists, yet she and her teammates couldn't overcome a poor shooting performance.

Sophomore Lauren Hyatt added 13 points, 10 in the first half, and eight rebounds for Dominican (4-10/3-3). Kimi Nakamura scored all 10 of her points in the second half and Jasmine Cox added a game-high 12 rebounds  (eight off the offensive glass) and team-high six assists for the Lady Penguins. In her first home game for Dominican, Salonika Quewon-Owens, with nine points, three steals and two assists, helped Dominican score 19 points in the final seven and a half minutes.

It was only the sixth time in 20 Pacific West Conference  games that Dominican has scored 70 or more points and lost.

“We've just got make shots,” said Dominican Head Coach Brianna Chambers. “The difference is they (the Seasiders) were getting too many lay-ups. That goes back to our transition defense. We've just got to execute.”

BYU-Hawaii's Shayla Washington, who leads the PacWest in scoring (20.6 ppg) and is fifth best in the nation in NCAA Division II, led all scorers with 27 points and teammate Danna Lynn Cooper came off the bench to play 14 minutes and contribute 26 points, including 10 in a row that lifted the Seasiders (2-3, 3-8) to an 18-point lead with 12 minutes to play.

BYU-Hawaii shot 53.4 percent from the floor, a season-high against the Lady Penguins. Though Dominican took 23 more field goal attempts, had 16 more offensive rebounds, recorded more assists and fewer turnovers to the Seasiders, the Penguins lost by 19.

Nelson made her first two shots but the Lady Penguins proceeded to miss 19 of their next 21 shots and fell behind by 12 points, 25-13, with 8:23 left in the opening half.  Sparked by Quewon-Owens, Dominican scored five points in 16 seconds to ignite an 11-0 run. Though Quewon-Owens was forced to the bench with three fouls, the Lady Penguins twice pulled within a point of tying the game and had one possession to possibly take the lead.

Aafter a Hyatt basket with 4:01 left in the half made the score 32-28, the Seasiders (who shot 50 percent from the floor after falling behind 4-2) closed the first 20 minutes by scoring nine of the last 11 points to take an 11-point lead, 41-30, to intermission. Hyatt, who has scored 42 points in her past four games, and Nelson combined for 18 of the Penguins' points.  Washington, without the foul-plagued Quewon-Owens guarding her most of the time, led BYU-Hawaii with 12 points.

The Lady Penguins can move up in the league standings on Monday when they play their next PacWest game against Chaminade. Game time in the Conlan Center is 5:30 p.m. Live coverage will be available at www.dominicanathletics.com/live.
