Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican Univeristy of California of men's soccer team was picked to finish 12th in the Pacific West Conference preseason coaches poll. The Penguins tacked a printout up in the locker room to remind themselves that nobody else believed in them. On Thursday, the Penguins traveled to San Francisco and topped Academy of Art University 2-1 for a fourth straight win and the team's third straight victory over teams predicted to finish higher in the standings.
With just 4:21 left in the first half,
Pedro Guevara got the Penguins (7-1/3-1) on the board first with his team-leading ninth goal of the season. The senior, currently ranked third in the nation in points per game and eighth in total goals, received the ball from junior
Sam Vella and, from 30 yards out, drilled the ball past the far post.
Seventy minutes into the match the Urban Knights (2-6-1/1-3-1) belted a 30-yard free kick into the box and Grimur Grimsson tied it up 1-1.
The Penguins recovered though and six minutes later sophomore
Nuri Bon-Acosta found
Kolby Mitnick for his second straight game-winner. Mitnick dribbled down the right side and fired a shot from the right corner of the box past the far post.
The Penguins defense, led by
Chris Sennes and
Cory Vanderpool, prevented the Urban Knights from scoring off nine corner kicks and sophomore goalkeeper
Erik Anderson, who entered tied for 18 in save percentage and tied for 20th in saves per game, recorded seven saves.
"We're obviously pleased with the win. Defensively, I thought we were very good," said Dominican Director of Soccer
Jon Delano. "Sam was fantastic in the middle of the field, he covered an unbelievable amount of ground and initiated his attack.
Swap [Mushiana] was very good and attacking-wise Kolby, Nuri,
David [Mendez], and Pedro are just relentless."
Dominican heads to Fresno Pacific University on Thursday, Oct. 4, for a 5:00 p.m. tilt. FPU is one of four new members in the PacWest.
