Penguins Resilient In Come-From-Behind Win

Swap Mushiana scores the first of his two goals in Tuesday's 4-3 win at Holy Names.
Box Score OAKLAND, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men's soccer team looked to improve upon its best start since 1996 on Tuesday versus Holy Names University. The Dominican men accomplished that goal but they needed a come-from-behind effort to earn the 4-3 Pacific West Conference victory.

The Penguins (6-1/2-1) looked in control with early shots from redshirt senior Pedro Guevara and sophomore Kolby Mitnick banging off the goal post and drifting just right of the frame. Then, Holy Names (4-3-1/2-3) marched down the field and attacked the Penguins' goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Erik Anderson put his whole body in front of a shot for a save but a minute and half later, just 9:38 into the match, Jaime Phillips connected with Christian Muehlberge to put the Hawks up 1-0.

Graduate student Swap Mushiana energized the Penguins less than three minutes later. Junior David Mendez dribbled down the right side to find Mushiana streaking down the middle of the box and he promptly tied it up. Just over a minute later Mitnick found a wide-open Mushiana, who booted it past HNU goalie Philip Poser, who came forward out of the net to defend.

Five minutes later, 18:06 into the match, the Hawk's Rasmus Larsson evened the match up at 2-2 with a rebound and shot into the back post after Anderson blocked a penalty kick attempt.

The game remained tied until the 53-minute mark when the Hawks deflected a ball off of Mitnick into their own goal, giving the Penguins a 3-2 advantage. A half-minute later, Mendez played a ball down the middle of the field to a streaking Mitnick for the eventual game-winner.

Jaime Phillips cut the Dominican lead to 4-3 with a goal in the 69th minute but the Penguins would hold on down the stretch and maintained possession the final two minutes to hang on.

"It was important to respond the way we did. The boys didn't put their heads down," said Mushiana. "We knew the goals would come and they did. It shows our character, knowing that we can work to get those goals."

The Penguins, who entered the game 11th in the nation in scoring offense and tied for 26th in goals scored and total points, are right back at it on Thursday, Sept. 27 versus Academy of Art University. Kickoff is slated for 10:30 a.m. at Crocker Amazon Field (1537 Geneva Street, San Francisco).
