Six Score in Double Digits in Win at Chaminade

Kimi Nakaumra scored a career-high 21 points and six Lady Penguins reached double digits as Dominican recorded its highest points total in Monday's 90-83 victory at Chaminade.
Box Score HONOLULU, Hawai'i — Junior guard Kimi Nakamura connected on seven of her first nine shots, including five-of-five from 3-point range, and scored a career-high 21 points in leading the Dominican University of California women's basketball team to a bounce-back 90-83 Pacific West Conference victory over Chaminade on Monday night at McCabe Gym.

Six Dominican players scored in double digits in the Lady Penguins' highest scoring game since they defeated Chaminade 90-60 in the final game of the 2009-10 season. Point guard Stephanie Carnes set a career-high with 16 points and added four assists and only one turnover in 33 minutes while and senior Te Manu Whakataki "Taki" Te Koi, who had a team-high seven rebounds, scored all of her 15 points in the second half when Dominican (4-19/3-10) built a 14-point lead and held on.

Juniors Melissa Wise and Jasmine Green and freshman Sarah Nelson came off the bench to combine for 32 points. Green's 11 points was a career-high and the 6-foot-4 Nelson, the league leader in blocked shots, had five rejections. Dianna Zane netted a game-high 22 points for the Silverswords (1-17/1-11), who beat BYU-Hawaii last week to end a 29-game losing streak.

“It was good bounce back win for us,” said Head Coach Brianna Chambers, whose team snapped a four-game losing streak. “Kimi shot the ball extremely well tonight and it was nice to get Melissa back after missing three games [with a concussion]."

The Lady Penguins started fast, racing to a 5-1 lead in the first 48 seconds. Behind Nakamura, Dominican built a comfortable cushion. Nakamura hit on four of her first five shots and had 11 points by the 11:11 mark of the first half. Dominican stretched its lead to 10, 27-17.

However, the Silverswords stormed back, going on a 19-4 run to seize the lead. But baskets by Dominican freshmen Ariana Flynn and Nelson allowed the Lady Penguins to regain the lead, 40-37, at intermission.

Nakamura had 14 points, including four 3-pointers, in the first half and Dominican received a big boost off the bench as Nelson and Green teamed for 14 points.

In the second half, Nakamura tied her previous career-high of 19 points with 17:41 remaining in the game. The Lady Penguins' advantage reached as high as 57-43 following five consecutive points by Te Koi.

Chaminade once again rallied, going on a 13-2 run to cut the Lady Penguins' lead to three, 59-56, but Nakamura stymied the comeback, hitting a driving lay-up for her 20 and 21st points of the contest with 11:22 left.

The Lady Penguins are off until Thursday, February 16 when they travel to Laie to play BYU-Hawaii. Game time is 7:00 p.m. Pacific time.
