Box Score HONOLULU, Hawai'i — It was case of bad timing and bad shooting for the Dominican University of California women's basketball team on Saturday night.
The Lady Penguins started a four-game Pacific West Conference road trip through Hawai'i by facing a Hawai'i Pacific University team that was angry after blowing a 19-point second-half lead in its previous home game loss to Dixie State College. Dominican was in the wrong place at the wrong time as the Sea Warriors (12-10/6-6) erupted for 58 points in the second half en route to a school record 111-43 victory over the young Lady Penguins (3-19/2-10) at McKinley High School gymnasium.
For the Lady Penguins, sophomore walk-on
Natalie Bentz had a career-high eight rebounds and teammates
Stephanie Carnes and freshman
Sarah Nelson had six rebounds apiece. Sophomore
Kayla Valentine and freshman
Danielle Yamauchi paced the Lady Penguins with seven points apiece while
Jasmine Green added six. Dominican shot 28 percent from the floor in the game.
"Natalie played hard. She had some nice boards," said Head Coach
Brianna Chambers. "She really played with heart tonight."
Paris Gravely, on 10-of-15 shooting, netted a game-high 31 points for hot-shooting HPU, including a school record tying six 3-point goals. She was one of five Sea Warriors players to score in double figures. HPU entered the contest as the league-leader in field goal percentage (.419) and 3-point shooting percentage (.345).
Dominican, which has struggled at the start of the games this season, actually jumped to a quick 3-0 lead on a 3-point shot by Valentine 22 seconds in the contest. But the Lady Penguins then missed 10 of their next 11 shots.
Hawai'i Pacific, in turn, went on a 20-5 tear, including 14 unanswered points. The Sea Warriors had another significant scoring spurt in the first half, scoring another 14 consecutive points while keeping the Lady Penguins from scoring a field goal for nearly six minutes.
The Sea Warriors' lead grew as large as 36 before junior
Kimi Nakamura, who scored five of her team's points in the first half, netted a -pointer with 15 seconds left in the half. Dominican, as team, connected on only 25 percent (8-for-32) of its shots in the first 20 minutes while HPU sank 53 percent (21-for-40).
The Lady Penguins' 10-day PacWest swing through Hawai'i continues on Monday, February 13 in Honolulu at 5:00 p.m. when they will face Chaminade University. The two teams last met on Jan. 19 in San Rafael when the Lady Penguins were victorious at home 58-53.
