Tale of two halves as Lady Penguins fall at Sonoma State

Lauren Hyatt had nine points as Dominican's closed the non-conference portion of the schedule with a loss at Sonoma State on Wednesday.
Box Score ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's basketball team dropped its fourth straight contest on Wednesday night, falling 76-49 to Sonoma State in non-conference action.

The Lady Penguins (2-8) struggled offensively, going just 4-for-28 (.157) in the first 20 minutes of action. Meanwhile the Seawolves (4-4) made 17-of-29 (.586) field goal attempts in that span. Dominican missed 12 three-pointers before Melissa Boscarino's trey to end the half made it 42-12 at intermission.

In the second half, Dominican looked like an entirely different team and outscored the Seawolves 37-34, though the deficit was too large to overcome. Dominican went 13-of-30 (.433) in the second half and made 5-of-10 (.500) from behind the three-point arc. Dominican finished the game on a 17-6 run.

The Seawolves were led by sophomore forward Travis Newman's game-leading 22-point, nine rebound effort. Junior forward Kristina Fahey added 18 points.

Sophomore center Lauren Hyatt led the Lady Penguins with nine points and added three rebounds and steals. Senior guard Kimi Nakamura scored eight points with two three-pointers. Junior forward Jasmine Cox pulled down a game-high nine rebounds and made a pair of free throws.

"We were right in it for the first five minutes and we dropped our heads a bit when Sonoma went on a run," said Dominican Head Coach Brianna Chambers. "We play emotionally and put too much pressure on ourselves to perform. We played well in the second half but we need to play both halves with that intensity and fight."

Dominican resumes play in 2013. They begin a three-game road trip through Hawai'i on Jan. 5 at UH Hilo. The Lady Penguins will also face Chaminade University on Jan. 7 and Hawai'i Pacific University on Jan. 9.
