Lady Penguins Play to Draw, Finish Above .500 in PacWest for First Time

It was Senior Day for the six Lady Penguins, who finished above .500 in the PacWest standings.
Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — Dominican University of California senior co-captain Julianna Bratsberg was getting ready before the game and said she wasn't ready for her career to end. Her teammates took that to heart and worked hard to give her and her fellow seniors every extra last second possible as the Lady Penguins played to a 0-0 double overtime draw vs. Point Loma Nazarene University on Saturday.

Dominican (7-7-3/6-5-3), who finishes the 2012 season in seventh place in the Pacific West Conference standings, quieted the Sea Lions (12-4-2/9-3-2), who finish in third, for the full 110 minutes. Bratsberg nearly won the game with two seconds left in her career with a straight-on shot but Point Loma keeper Tiffany Kracy made an incredible diving save to her right to keep things at a draw.

"Props to her," said Bratsberg of the save. "I heard Jon [Delano, director of soccer] counting down and I knew I didn't have time for another shot. I aimed far post and she made a great save."

The Lady Penguins took just four shots in regulation but applied the pressure in double overtime with five shots, including Bratsberg's near game-winner. In the first overtime, Bratsberg had a shot go wide, then freshman Lauren Gollnick booted a shot high. Gollnick forced Kracy to make another save early in the second overtime, followed by a Jessica Ramirez shot headed away by the Sea Lions.

The Lady Penguins defense literally worked overtime after big plays in regulation kept the game scoreless. With Dominican outnumbered in front of the goal, sophomore Mckenna Kimball blocked a ball early in the second half and late in the game senior co-captain Emily Whitaker threw her body in front of the ball to deflect it back to goalkeeper Megan Herring to prevent a Point Loma scoring opportunity. Point Loma's Claire Matthews launched a shot in the first overtime that Herring dove to stop. She made another save off a free kick with one minute left and caught a soft shot with 12 seconds left in overtime to force another 10 minutes of play.

"It's been such an honor to play for Dominican," said Bratsberg. "I've learned so much on and off the field with this team. We're a true family."

Seniors Bratsberg, Alex Moran, Mary Wheeler, Whitaker, Mallory Engelhardt, and Devan Weber, who were honored in a pregame Senior Day ceremony, are a rare class that has spent their full four years together. Bratsberg, who redshirted in 2009 due to injury, has actually been with the program for five seasons since 2008.

"I have made some of my best memories in the past four years with these girls. I couldn't have asked for a better senior year," echoed Whitaker. "I'm proud to be a part of the Dominican women's soccer team and will be here to support them as they continue to succeed."

The Lady Penguins helped to give Dominican its first winning PacWest record this season since joining the conference in 2009 and for that, and so much more they won't soon be forgotten.
