Lady Penguins drop final tuneup before PacWest play

Noelle Roldan was one of three Lady Penguins with 10 points on Tuesday.
Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's basketball team had three players reach double digit scoring but it wasn't enough in a 83-63 non-conference loss to Menlo College on Tuesday night at the Conlan Center.

After shooting .537 in their win against Cal State Stanislaus, the Lady Penguins (1-3) shot just .309 from the field in what they hoped would be a tune-up for when Pacific West Conference action begins later in the week. Dominican struggled to find its bearings offensively in the first half and 10-of-37 (.270) shooting found the Lady Penguins facing a 43-27 deficit at halftime against their old California Pacific Conference rival.

Menlo (6-0) pushed the lead to as large as 25 in the second half thanks in large part to a 27-point performance by sophomore guard Jolise Limcaco. Dominican climbed back into halfway through the second half with an eight-point run powered by guards Noelle Roldan and Yvonne Sanchez. However, the Oaks answered with a 9-1 run of their own to expand the lead right back.

Dominican was led by a trio of guards — Kimi Nakamura, Roldan, and Sanchez — who all scored 10 points apiece. Sophomore center Sarah Nelson was limited to her lowest output of the season with seven points but still pulled down six rebounds and recorded three blocks. Lauren Hyatt came off the bench to add seven points and 10 rebounds.

Amber Lane and Jenna Marinaro added 11 points apiece for the Oaks.

“I like the fact that we made a run in the second half,” said Head Coach Brianna Chambers. “Last game it was about maintaining a lead. Tonight it ended up being about how to play from behind and get back in it, but hopefully we don't find ourselves in that situation too often.”

The Lady Penguins head to another old CalPac rival, Holy Names University, on Saturday, Nov. 27 to begin Pacific West Conference play. Holy Names is one of four new teams who have joined the PacWest for the 2012–13 season, bringing the conference to 14 teams, the largest in NCAA Division II West Region. Gametime is an early 2:00 p.m. tipoff in Oakland.
