Box Score FRESNO, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men's soccer team saw its four-game win streak snapped by Fresno Pacific University on Thursday. The Penguins, who entered the week ranked No. 10 in the NCAA Division II West Region poll, never quite got rolling and suffered a 4-1 setback in the Pacific West Conference contest.
Gustavo Silva got FPU (6-4/4-3) on the board first in the 26th minute. He took a cross from 23 yards out and had an open look from seven yards out to put the Sunbirds up 1-0. Bruno Pessoa scored the eventual game-winner just five minutes later when he chested a ball from Paul Islas.
Dominican (7-2/3-2), who entered the contest ranked ninth in NCAA Division II scoring offense, was outshot 13-1 in the first half but came out attacking in the second half with eight second-half shots, seven on goal. The Penguins scored their lone goal in the 51st minute when
Evan Cordova found
Nuri Bon-Acosta from 11 yards out and the junior scored from straight-on. However, FPU keeper Fabian Rangel was there to keep the Penguins at bay the rest of the way.
Senior
Pedro Guevara, Dominican's leading goal scorer, took four shots and placed three on goal but was held scoreless in the contest.
Silva assisted on another FPU goal in the 82nd minute to Fabricio Nazare for his team-leading seventh goal of the season and the pair assisted on Guillermo Talancon's goal in the 87th minute.
