Box Score KANEOHE, Hawai'i — The Dominican University of California men's soccer team had to play from behind for the second time in as many games on Sunday. The Penguins came back from an early 2-0 deficit to tie it and force double overtime but after 110 minutes the Penguins played to a 2-2 draw with host Hawai'i Pacific University.
The Sea Warriors (7-6-3/6-3-3) took an early advantage on goals by Alejandro Porras and Heimana Chene in the 12th and 18th minutes. The Penguins (8-7-1/4-7-1) went into halftime trailing 2-1 after the Penguins took advantage of a free kick as a result of a yellow card charged to HPU. Sophomore
Fabian Valdez-Mendoza headed the free kick from
Swap Mushiana into the back of the net 25 minutes into action.
In the 61st minute senior
Pedro Guevara fired off a shot on goal but HPU goalie Mael Lefebvre was there for the save. Sophomore
Kolby Mitnick charged in for the rebound and tied it at 2-2. The Penguins had a pair of chances just minutes after but were called offsides both times. Guevara had another shot on goal in the 85th minute that Lefebvre saved.
The Dominican defense came up huge with less than a minute left in regulation when a Porras shot was blocked. Dominican went the other way with time ticking down but junior
David Mendez's shot with 20 seconds left went high of the goal.
Another HPU shot was blocked and a Mendez shot was saved in the first overtime period. Neither team placed a shot on goal in the second overtime period.
On Tuesday, the Penguins travel to the north shore of Hawai'i and conclude their three-game road trip to Oahu at BYU-Hawaii.
