Box Score HONOLULU, HI — A change of scenery might be just what the Dominican University of California men's soccer team needed. The Penguins rallied from a 2-0 deficit to top host Chaminade University 5-2 to on Friday to begin what the Penguins hope is a successful three-game road trip on Oahu.
After getting off to the program's best start ever, the Penguins dealt with injuries that saw the team's record plunge to .500. Friday's Pacific West Conference victory got the Penguins back above .500 at 8-7/4-7 while Chaminade slipped to 2-9-3/2-7-3 on the season.
Dominican trailed early after Keegan Tomita and Colton Gallt scored early goals in the first 10 minutes for the Silver Swords. The Penguins rallied late in the first half for a goal in the 33rd mintue by sophomore
Kolby Mitnick from junior
David Mendez to cut the halftime lead to 2-1.
Just three minutes into the second half Mitnick, who is in the top 20 in NCAA Division II in assists, connected with senior
Pedro Guevara to tie the score at 2-2 and it was all Penguins from there on out.
Mitnick scored his second of the day from sophomore Nuri-Bon Acosta in the 60th minute. The goal, Mitnick's eighth, turned out to be the game-winner and his team-leading fourth of the season.
Guevara added his team-leading 11th goal of the season in the 69th minute from another pass by Mendez and senior
Garrett Mitchell scored his first-career goal in the 82nd minute to close it out for Dominican.
"After getting down early it was good to show that we weren't going to give up. It's our last road trip of the season and it felt good to contribute," said Mitchell. "It's a good way to start the end of our [seniors'] careers and to be able to help the team win games."
Dominican faces Hawai'i Pacific University on Sunday, Oct. 28 at 12:30 p.m. in Hawaii and heads north on the island to face BYU-Hawaii on Tuesday, Oct. 30. The Penguins finish the season at home on Saturday, Nov. 3 vs. Point Loma.
